 Presenter 1: Dr. Patrick Parrish – Chief of Training Activities (WMO)

Topic 1: Presentation on WMO Global Campus Initiative

Dr. Patrick Parrish is Chief of Training Activities for the Education and Training Office at the World Meteorological Organization, having been in the training profession for 35 years, with an MA and PhD in Education. He has worked in meteorology and environmental sciences education and training for 28 years, including over 19 years with The COMET Program/UCAR, in Boulder, Colorado. He moved to WMO in August 2012. Dr. Parrish has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, receiving over 1000 citations, on instructional design and technology, cultural dimensions of learning, and the aesthetics of learning and teaching. In recent years he has been promoting the WMO Global Campus Initiative in the global community, working to invite contributors to increase collaboration and sharing in education and training for capacity development in earth science-related disciplines.

Abstract

WMO Global Campus: Collaboration and Sharing in Education and Training for Capacity Development: Open Educational Practices in Action

This presentation provides a background to the history of the WMO Global Campus concept and its goals and principles. It presents the key components or activity areas so far discussed and will invite new ideas based on the principles of collaboration and cooperation. The WMO Global Campus has had at its core, the goal to meet WMO Member’s needs and support WMO Strategic Plan through increased access to quality learning opportunities, greater alignment with WMO standards, promotion of new curriculum advances and training practices, shared resources and platforms for communication, and shared certification methods.
